Deposit THE FUSHUN BAUXITE MINE IS LOCATED ABOUT 50 KM FROM SHENYANG AND WAS FIRST OPERATED BY THE JAPANESE BEFORE 1920 AS A COAL BASE. THE DEPOSIT CONSISTS OF AN OIL-BEARING ALUMINOUS SHALE, FROM WHICH OIL IS EXTRACTED AND THE SHALE USED FOR REFINERY FEED. A THICK (OVER 100 M) COAL MEASURE UNDERLIES THE SHALE AND IS EXPLOITED FOR FUEL PURPOSES. ALTHOUGH COAL OUTPUT HAS SHRUNK TO 10 MILLION TPA, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ENOUGH SHALE PRESENTLY EXISTS (1991) TO SUPPLY A 200,000 TPA ALUMINA PLANT FOR MANY YEARS TO COME, HOWEVER NO RESERVES ARE KNOWN TO EXIST IN THE LITERATURE. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE FUSHUN ALUMINUM/ALUMINA COMPLEX, REFER TO SEQ. NOS. 5700351016 AND 5700352001.
