Comments on the production information

  • ONLY INFORMATION ON PRODUCTS WAS FOR 1989: 35,000 METRIC TONS OF INGOTS, 14,000 METRIC TONS OF BILLETS, 19,000 METRIC TONS OF CASTING STRIPS, 2,000 METRIC TONS OF WIRE ROD, AND 23,000 METRIC TONS OF ROLLING SLAB. PLANT CAPACITY WAS SCHEDULED TO DROP TO 75,000 METRIC TONS IN 1991 FROM 92,000 METRIC TONS IN PRIOR YEARS.
  • FORTY PERCENT OF PRODUCTION IS USED FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION, 55 PERCENT IS EXPORTED TO GENERATE HARD CURRENCY, AND 5 PERCENT IS EXPORTED TO OTHER EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • PLANT CONSTRUCTED IN 1954 WITH EXPANSIONS IN 1964 AND 1987. THE PLANT HAS DRY SCRUBBING TECHNOLOGY. IN 1987, AN ONGOING 150 MILLION DOLLAR MODERINIZATION PROGRAM WAS UNDERWAY.

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE PLANT HAS 344 POTS IN THREE POTLINES, BUT ONE WAS SCHEDULED TO CLOSE DOWN IN 1991 BECAUSE IT WAS THE OLDEST AND LEAST EFFICIENT SODERBERG LINE. THE PLANT GETS 65 PERCENT OF ITS POWER FROM SLOVENIA AND 35 PERCENT FROM SERBIA. MORE THAN 50 PERCENT IS COAL GENERATED AND THE BALANCE IS HYDROELECTRIC AND NUCLEAR. ENERGY REQUIREMENTS ARE: THE NEW PECHINEY REQUIRES 13,600 KILOWATT-HOURS PER METRIC TON OF ALUMINIUM, THE MODERNIZED POTLINE REQUIRES 14,500 KILOWATT-HOURS PER METRIC TON OF ALUMINIUM, AND THE SODERBERG POTLINE REQUIRES 17,500 KILOWATT-HOURS PER METRIC TON OF ALUMINIUM PRODUCED. THE OLD 20,000 METRIC TON PER YEAR SODERBERG LINE WAS SCHEDULED TO CLOSE DOWN BY 1991. THE DATE OF CONSTRUCTION WAS 1954, WITH MAJOR EXPANSIONS IN 1964 AND 1987.
  • ABOUT 50 PERCENT OF FEED ORIGINATES FROM THE KIDRICEVO REFINERY. SINCE 1988, THE PLANT HAS IMPORTED ALUMINA TO FULFILL CAPACITY.
