Comments on the geologic information

  • THE OREBODY IS FOLDED, STRATABOUND IN ULTRABASIC AND BASIC HOST ROCKS SUCH AS OLIVINE AND SERPENTINE. THE VLAHNA MINE BELONGS TO THE KALIMASH COMPLEX AND IS LOCATED NEAR THE YUGOSLAVIAN BOARDER. RESERVES AT VLAHNA ARE ESTIMATED TO BE 1.5 TO 2 MILLION METRIC TONS OF CHROMITE ORE. KALIMASH MINE HAS OPERATING CONTROL OVER THE SMALLER CHROMITE OCCURRENCE AT VLLAHNE, WHERE RESERVES ARE ESTIMATED TO BE 2 MILLION TONS AT A GRADE OF 18 TO 38 PERCENT CR2O3. THE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 100,000 TON PER YEAR MINING OPERATION BEGAN IN 1989, AND IS STILL IN THE DEVELOPMENT PHASE. SEE VLAHNA, M.A.S. SEQUENCE NUMBER 481-023-0003.

Comments on the production information

  • PRODUCTION BEGAN IN THE LATE FIFTIES. THE BENEFICATION PLANT WAS BUILT IN THE SEVENTIES.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • CONCENTRATES GRADING 49 % CR2O3 (70-71 % RECOV.). PLANS ARE TO INCREASE MILL CAP.TO 200,000 MTPY AND IMPROVE REC.TO 85 %.
  • COMMODITY GRADE REPRESENTS HEADGRADE AS REPORTED BY C.R.U.. THIS NUMBER PROBABLY INCLUDES DILUTION. NO RESERVE FIGURES FOR THIS MINE ARE AVAILABLE. ORE IN THE NORTH OF ALBANIA, WHERE KALIMASH IS LOCATED IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED LOW QUALITY.

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE CONCENTRATE GRADE AVERAGES 50 PERCENT CR2O3 WITH A CR/FE RATIO OF 3 TO 1. THE PLANT IS UNABLE TO TREAT ORE WITH A HIGH OLIVINE CONTENT. THE BENEFICIATION PLANT IS SIMILAR TO THAT AT BULQIZE. B.G.R. REPORTED THAT THE MILL HAD A RATED CAPACITY OF 160,000 METRIC TONS ORE PER YEAR. AS CAN BE OBSERVED IN THE PRODUCTION TABLE, ORE THROUGHPUT INCREASED THROUGH THE YEARS 1984 TO 1990, WHILE CONCENTRATE PRODUCTION REMAINED CONSTANT AT 50,000 TONS PER YEAR. THIS OBSERVATION WOULD GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE GRADE OF THE OREBODY BEING MINED IS DECREASING OVER TIME, SINCE IT IS NECESSARY THAT MORE ORE BE MINED TO PRODUCE THE SAME AMOUNT OF CONCENTRATE OUTPUT.
  • THE CHROMITE CONCENTRATE IS TRANSPORTED FROM THE MILL TO MJEDE BY TRUCK. FROM MJEDE, THE CHROMITE CONCENTRATE IS TRANSPORTED BY RAIL TO DURRES FOR EXPORT.
