Deposit WMC IS SAID TO EXPORT 72% NI MATTE IN UNKNOWN QUANTITY. WMC WILL SELL 21,000 MT NI IN MATTE TO SUMITOMO, SHERRITT, AND OUTOKUMPU, WHILE 29,000 OF THE PLANNED PRODUCTION WILL BE SENT TO KWINANA FOR FURTHER PROCESSING. KALGOORLIE CAPACITY INCREASE BASED ON PLANS TO DEVELOP NEW UNDERGROUND OPS AT LEINSTER OPEN PIT. KAMBALDA IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE ALSO, DUE TO INCREASED INCENTIVES AND MORE CONTRACT MINING. SMELTER SHUT DOWN ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1993 FOR A SCHEDULED RECONSTRUCTION AND UPGRADE. THE UPGRADE INCLUDED REBUILDING THE FURNACES, AND A NEW OXYGEN PLANT. TOTAL COST OF THE WAS ABOUT A$67 MILLION. THE SMELTER RE-OPENED IN LATE NOVEMBER, 1993.
Deposit PRODUCTION OF NICKEL WILL INCREASE DUE TO THE EXPANSION OF OF PROCESSING CAPACITY AT KALGOORLIE. *SULPHUR DIOXIDE EMISSION LEVELS FORCED THE CLOSURE OF THE SMELTER 5 TIMES IN 14 DAYS. (1-21-94)
