  • OPENED IN 1915 BY GREAT LAKES STONE & LIME COMPANY. 1923 ACQUIRED BY KELLEY ISLAND LIME AND TRANSPORT COMPANY. IN 30'S COMPANY FOUND POOR QUALITY PRODUCT AND IT WAS ABANDONED. LAND WAS THEN ACQUIRED BY NORTHERN MICHIGAN LIMESTONE CORPORATION THEN SOLD TO CALVERT INVESTMENT COMPANY.

Deposit TRAVERSE GROUP OUTCROPS AT THE ROCKPORT LOCATION. THE ROCKPORT QUARRY LIMESTONE IS UNDERLAIN BY THE BELL SHALE. THE BELL SHALE IS 80 FEET THICK IS IS PRIMARILY BLUE, CALCAREOUS SHALE, WITH A FEW MINOR LIMESTONE BEDS. THE SHALE IS REPORTED TO HAVE HIGH LEVELS OF CALCIUM CARBONATE AND WOULD NOT BE GOOD FOR BRICK OR TILE MANUFACTURING.
