Economic information

Comments on the geologic information

  • THE LAKE ELLEN KIMBERLITE IS INTRUDED INTO VOLCANIC ROCK OF THE PALEOPROTEROZOIC HEMLOCK FORMATION, PART OF THE MARQUETTE RANGE SUPERGROUP. THE WEATHERED EXPOSURES OF THE KIMBERLITE ARE HEAVILY IRON-STAINED RUBBLE CONSISTING OF FRAGMENTS ABOUT 1 CM IN DIAMETER. THE RUBBLE FRAGMENTS ARE A MIXTURE OF FINE- TO MEDIUM-GRAINED KIMBERLITE AND INCLUSIONS OF A VARIETY OF OTHER ROCKS. THE KIMBERLITE IS COMPOSED OF OLIVINE (IN PART SERPENTINIZED), PYROXENE, MICA, GARNET, AND ILMENITE. A COMMON INCLUSION IN KIMBERLITE IS DOLOMITE, PERHAPS DERIVED FROM THE ORDOVICIAN BLACK RIVER GROUP.

Deposit TWO SMALL EXPOSURES OF RUBBLY REDDISH-BROWN, HIGHLY WEATHERED KIMBERLITE ALONG THE ROADBED OF AN ABANDONED LOGGING ROAD. THE TWO EXPOSURES ARE ABOUT 120 M APART AND PROVIDE A MINIMUM DIMENSION OF THE BODY. A MAGNETIC SURVEY DEFINES AN ELLIPTICALLY SHAPED POSITIVE MAGNETIC ANOMALY (EXPOSED KIMBERLITE IS HIGHLY MAGNETIC), ABOUT 180 M LONG IN A EAST-WEST DIRECTION AND 120 M WIDE.
