Comments on the geologic information

  • THE AMYGDALOIDS (LODES) OF THE EVERGREEN SERIES ARE GENERALLY MASSIVE BASALT WITH FEWER AMYGDULES THAN MINERALIZED BASALT FLOWS IN HOUGHTON-KEWEENAW COUNTIES. MINERALIZATION IS USUALLY CONFINED TO WELL-DEVELOPED FLOW-TOP BRECCIAS OR FISSURES, WHICH ARE COMMON IN THE AREA. MINERALIZED AREAS OFTEN ARE BRIGHT RED OR GREEN, CAUSED BY AN ABUNDANCE OF RED FELDSPAR AND GREEN EPIDOTE. NATIVE COPPER IN SMALL AND LARGE MASSES IS IRREGULARLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE LODES. IN THE EVERGREEN LODE (AT THE MASS MINE), MUCH OF THE COPPER WAS PRESENT IN LARGE MASSES -- IN FACT, A RATHER LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE COPPER FROM ALL THE LODES OF THE EVERGREEN SERIES IS COARSE (BUTLER AND BURBANK, 1929). RICH GROUND IS WHOLLY CONFINED TO FRAGMENTAL PARTS OF A LODE, AND THE AREAS OF GOOD GROUND USUALLY COINCIDE WITH AREAS IN WHICH THE LODE IS ALSO RELATIVELY THICK.
