Deposit Malundwe is an unclassified copper deposit type in basement schist.
General Malundwe is one piece of the larger Lumwana Project in the Mwombezhi Dome area. Former MAS records 7940300008 and 7940300009 (newMRDS 10182943 and 10183561) are unclear as to what is included in each record. It was more straightforward to simply create new records for Malundwe and Chimiwungo than to try to make sense of those records. Recommend they be deleted even though they contain information.
Deposit COBALT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MINERALIZATION, HOWEVER NO GRADE IS REPORT. THERE IS LATERAL ZONING OF THE MINERALS IN THE MINERALIZED HORIZON FROM BORNITE TO CHALCOPYRITE- BORNITE TO CHALCOPYRITE-PYRITE. THIS STUDY IS VERY PRELIMINARY. ODDS ARE THAT THE PROPERTY WILL NOT COME ON LINE IN 1984.THE PRESENT(1978) STUDY ASSUMES CONSTRUCTION OF A MINE&MILL ONLY,UTILIZING EXISTING SMELTING/REFINING CAPACITY ON THE COPPERBELT(IT IS 296 KM TO KAMBOVE OR 170 KM TO CHINGOLA BY ROAD). A POSSIBLE ALTERNATE PLAN WOULD BE TO CONSTRUCT A SMELTER/REFINERY ON SITE(THIS DEVELOPMENT PLAN WAS NOT ADDRESSED IN THE CODING). IN 1975(BEFORE THE ANGOLA CIVIL CONFLICT) A JOINT PROJECT WAS ANNOUNCED BETWEEN ANGOLA AND ZAMBIA.IT WAS PROPOSED TO BUILD A ROAD(ESTIMATE 400 KM NEEDED) FROM MWINILUNGA TO MOXICO PROV.IN ANGOLA TO LINK-UP WITH THE BENGUELA RR. THIS ROUTE WILL REQUIRE IMPROVEMENT OF THE 150 KM OF DIRT ROAD BETWEEN MWINILUNGA AND CHIMIWUNGO/MALUNDWE. OP COSTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: ($/MT ORE) MINING $ 3.06 FOR I-SET COSTS,DEBT MILLING $ 1.99 SERVICE WAS SPLIT 50-50 SMELTING $ 1.82 TO MINING&MILLING AND REFINING $ 0.55 TRANSPORTATION WAS TRANS. $ 0.50 ADDED TO THE SMELT/REF DEBT SERVICE $ 3.50 CUSTOM CHARGE. TOTAL $11.42 MINE&MILL OP COSTS WERE DETERMINED FROM MATTHEWS MANUAL. ALL OTHER OP COSTS WERE ESTIMATED FROM ACTUAL ZAMBIAN COSTS. [copied from former MAS record 7940300008=newMRDS 10182943].
