| General | Anna B. Wilson and Mary Ellen Benson of the USGS Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center along with Ron Zelt and Bob Swanson from the USGS Nebraska Water Science Center in Lincoln NE visited the site on July 7, 2015. We were hosted by Preferred Sands of Genoa's Plant Manager, Scott Hyde. |
| General | Over the decades the power plant has operated, sediment has built up in the canal and the power company must approximately 2 million tons a year from the canal. The power company was running out of space to put the dredge spoils and it was discovered that the sand had some of the properties of hydraulic fracturing (frac) sand. The arrangement between mine and power company means that the canal can be kept open to power the plant and the mining company makes a useable product out of the waste material. |
